Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala makes history as she is appointed first female to head WTO

Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo Iweala has made history by becoming the first woman to head the World Trade Organisation WTO.

Okonjo-Iweala’s appointment was announced on Monday February 15, 2021.

Okonjo -Iweala is the first woman and first African to head the WTO.

Her appointment comes after intense politicking which saw the US under the leadership of President Donald Trump decline to support her in spite of the fact that she holds American citizenship.

President Joe Biden’s win however tipped the scales in her favour after expressing his administration’s “strong support” for her candidature.

In accepting she said ‘I want to make sure that people remember my continent producing the first leader of the WTO that made a difference.”
