NAWOJ calls for arrest of domestic violence perpetrator

The Nigerian Women of Journalists (NAWOJ) has condemned the assault of a female journalist Nafeesah Vandi by her estranged husband Ibrahim Aliyu.

NAWOJ made its position known in a statement by its President Ladi Bala.

Mrs Bala in the statement, described as unacceptable the rise in the number of cases of battery against women by their spouses.

The NAWOJ President, noted that “in August 2022 alone, there were three documented cases of wife battery that inflicted serious physical injuries, mental torture, dehumanised sanctity and dignity of victims by their husbands in the country. One of the sad cases, is confirmed dead from the alleged unfortunate violence.”

In the case of Nafeesah Vandi, the statement while noting that the victim’s husband, Ibrahim Aliyu, a dismissed staff of PHCN relegated his responsibilities of fending for his family added that Mallam Ibrahim brutalised his wife shortly after issuing her a divorce letter.

The statement further called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, to fish out the perpetrator of this heinous and barbaric act against a female Journalist and bring him to book.

NAWOJ, while emphasizing that the fundamental rights and dignity of women must be upheld and respected by all at all times, equally called on Faith based organisations, human rights activists as well as relevant Non-Governmental Organisations, (NGOs) to rise to the occasion and speak out against such societal ills in the country.
