Edo governor’s wife threatens legal action for marginalization of women

Betsy Obaseki, wife of Edo state governor has threatened to institute legal action against any public official who marginalizes women in appointments, especially at the local government level.

Mrs Obaseki made her position known at the Edo Women Summit in Benin City.

The governor’s wife who vowed to use the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law to challenge gender-based discrimination in politics, said female officeholders deserve respect, equal opportunities as well as fair compensation for their contributions to the state’s development.

Mrs Obaseki, while acknowledging the progress made in empowering women across the state, stressed that it is essential to secure positions for women in the highest echelons of power.

The governor’s wife further lamented that women had faced many obstacles in their quest for political representation because some men continued to resist and hinder their progress. She however pledged to hold those responsible for marginalizing women accountable.
