Asisat Oshoala makes history with record win at CAF awards

Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala has won the 2023 CAF Women’s Player of the year for a record sixth time.

Oshoala won the award for the sixth time at a ceremony in Morocco on Monday.

Another big winner at the awards ceremony is Nigerian Victor Osimhen who won the CAF 2023 Men’s Player of the Year award.

Osimhen’s wins breaks a 24-year break as the last time Nigeria won was the 1999 win by Kanu Nwankwo.

 Chiamaka Nnadozie, won the Woman Goalkeeper of the year and the Super Falcons emerged the Women’s National Team of the Year. 

In her speech while accepting the award, Oshoala called for collaboration between African countries in order to perform better in International competitions.

“We have to work together as a team because football is a team sport. Let’s start at home and go to the world and conquer it,” Oshoala said.

Meanwhile President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the award winners. In a statement by Special Adviser on Media & Publicity Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu commended them for their outstanding performances on both national and international stages.

“Watching the great ambassadors of Nigeria stand atop the podium as the African Footballers of the Year, in the men and women categories, on Monday night in Marrakesh, Morocco, has strengthened our belief that with hard work, perseverance, and the help of God, everything this nation needs for greatness is within us and available to us,” the President Tinubu said.
