Group unveils report on Tech-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence

Studies by a faith group Journalists for Christ (JFC) International Outreach has identified Facebook as the social media platform with the most pervasive issue of Tech-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) in Nigeria.

The study was presented in a report at a recent event in collaboration with the World Association for Christ Communication (WACC).

According to the report, 66 incidents of TFGBV was documented across various platforms, with Facebook accounting for 49 cases, coming a distant second was X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram with 8 cases each and tiktok with 1. 

The report further broke down the findings to reveal that male perpetrators were responsible for 28.8% of the incidents, while female perpetrators accounted for 25.8%.

The breakdown shows that bloggers and skit makers contributed significantly to the problem, comprising 22.7% of the cases, alongside social media influencers and public figures, who represented 4.6%.

Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, JFC Founding President, stressed the importance of data in advocating for change, “since the trend of Misogyny and TFGBV has become worrisome globally, we have conducted research to quantify these issues,” he said.

According to Mr. Otufodunrin, “because it’s possible to speak about these things, we need to put figures to them, as this research involves monitoring of social media and seeing these trend and paying attention to them.”
