Nigerian Army decorates first female Infantry Corps Army Warrant Officer

In a move aimed at deepening gender inclusion, the Nigeria Army has decorated Warrant Officer Hajara Egbunu, the first woman to attain the rank of Army Warrant Officer.

A statement by the Army on its facebook page revealed that Brigadier General Mathias Amatso, Commander of the Nigerian Army Women Command, decorated Army Warrant Officer Egbunu, with her new rank badge during a ceremony held at the Command Conference Room in Abuja on January 3, 2025.

According to the statement, this landmark achievement makes Egbunu the first female soldier from the elite Infantry Corps and the Nigerian Army Women Command to attain the prestigious rank of Army Warrant Officer.

In her acceptance speech, Army Warrant Officer Egbunu who expressed deep gratitude to God also acknowledged Brigadier General Amatso’s guidance, which had been instrumental in her role as the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the Command, and thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General OO Oluyede, for his visionary leadership and support in facilitating her career advancement.
